I'm writing a Java program with a GUI for a course assignment.
I would like to know how I can hide the cmd window so that it doesn't show when running the program, and that it closes automatically when I close the GUI window.

I think you mean the DOS prompt? Because I think most on these boards are Microsofty...
You can Java Web Start
You can launch with a double-click of a jar
You can write a launcher in C
You can write an applet and the applet launches the GUI (see inside your JDK1_6_xx --%26gt;demo --%26gt;jfc --%26gt;Java2D --%26gt; the Java2Demo.html and the companion /src, tracing the first 3 class
You can write a .bat that starts out with: java spiffyGUI
(then, I don't know the commands, but you would minimize DOS prompt, and java puts up a splash screen). The .bat approach does allow a "poor man's" desktop icon. After you create the .bat, you can change it's desktop icon.
Out of those options, the Java Web Start (JNI) is the best option, followed by the jar. Any method to hide a DOS launch puts two taskbar buttons on Mr. Windoze GUI.

Why can't I see the java games I downloaded on my motorola razr?
I downloaded several games for my Razr but the display only shows part of the game - sort of like when the resolution is set too low for a computer monitor. I can't find any settings to adjust the resolution on the phone or the games. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Well.... first of all, the RAZR SUCKS. *ahem* sorry. anyways, it depends, did you down loadit off of get it now, or a web site? if you downloaded it off of get it now, your phone may have a problem. if you downloaded it off of a website, the game is not properly formatted for phones.

Put it this way. Sun Microsystems has been churning out virus-free versions of Java for years. They'd lose a lot of money and trust if a virus showed up in an update.

Windows Vista users do you have trouble running Java on your computer?
I play alot of Pogo games and everytime i try to pull up a game I get a stupid error screen so I go and delete the Java already installed and re install it then it will pull up fine for a few days then bang there it is again ! I never had this trouble with windows xp. Is it just Vista or do you think it's my computer ?

What are the differences between java script and html links?
How do they related in terms to legacy links? Maintenance? Loading time? Any and everything else?

HTML is a language that creates all the beautifull colors in a webpage, and it helps you put the objects in place, replace backgrounds.. But Javascript is a small programming languages that can be used in an HTML page, but you can't make Javascript pages, javascript is used to create an active interface like webforms or to solve some internet problems.. It's a small interactive program online if this makes it more clear.
For the loading time well there is no difference since you can't have a javascript page with HTML as the base.

Yes. You will need it to run java programs in your browser or on your desktop.
What function does it serve?
The Java virtual machine is a bit like a translator. I'll explain.
Most software programs when they are created are written in a human readable code. Then a compiler and linker takes that code and compiles it into machine code. That machine code can only run on very specific hardware and operating systems. Programs Like Microsoft Office are an example. It has to be compiled to run on Windows. To run on a Mac it has to be recompiled use a Mac compiler.
Java programs are different. They aren't compiled into machine code. They are compiled into what's called, "Java Byte Code". When you run a java program, the virtual machine translates the Byte Code into Machine code.
The advantage of java is that you only have to compile and distribute one version of your program. If Microsoft office was created using Java, you would bye only one version of it and it would work on both your Mac, WindowsXP\Vista, or any other operating system that has a java virtual machine on it(Like Unix or Linux or your Mobile Phone). Instead, you have to bye different versions.
The disadvantage of java is that it comes at a price of speed. The virtual machine translator slows down your program. Though the speed keeps getting better with each release.
