I'm a novice Java programmer and I only know what I've been taught in lessons and from reading. There's so many packages and readily available classes and stuff to use but I wouldn't know how to use them -
How do I start learning about what they do and how they work?
I have downloaded the java.sun API specification but it doesn't really explain what most things do. Help. Thanks.
How do I go about learning what all the API packages in Java do and how to use them when I program?
The Java API is big. Huge even. When I've developed Java stuff, I always have to keep the reference open. I would say, just decide what sort of programming you're going to be doing the most of and study the APIs for the relevant packages. Be it servlet stuff or desktop stuff, or what-have-you.
Reply:You say you've been taught a little already - was this in school or college. Anyhow, you must have local colleges or further education centres where they provide ICT training courses, and Java programming could be one of these. If not, try online learning, via www.learndirect.co.uk They offer a lot of computer courses. However, having learned the basics, you would probably learn more by spending time yourself, getting to know the program inside out. I find this is usually best as the learning sticks, and you learn everything you need, whereas at a course, they teach you only what they want you to know, which possibly isn't what you need for the real world.
