Why are there so many Java updates on my computer, why are they so big, and do I need to keep them?

I'm not even really sure why I need Java, except that apparently I do.





So I was going through trying to clean up my hard drive and I noticed that there are about six or seven Java Runtime Updates, and they are all much, much bigger than the rest of the programs in my list. What can I do about this?
