Thanks!

What are the differences and similarities between Java and AS3?
ActionScript was released into the public domain and is currently being debated as the ECMA specification. ActionScript is more akin to javascript than to java.

ECMA, if it comes to be, and if Microsoft can accommodate it, will make for the first time, a universal scripting mechanism for all web technologies.

Java, also, has been released into the public domain with the hope for wider adoption. Java is capable of running cross-platform. ActionScript is not supported on the Linux platform. Java is supported on Linux and others. Java also incorporates the ECMA script standard as part of the java API. java is compiled bytecode.

As far as learning AS3. It is the same as javascript with a little stronger data typing. AS3 is part of Flash and the strength of programming AS3 comes from the graphical timeline in the authoring mode of Flash.
