In full detail, please explain or link me to a website where I can learn how to.
How should I quarantine Java Moss %26amp; Java Fern for my Betta tank and for how long?
If you wanna go for the straight quarantine, all you have to do is put them in some container of water (it doesn't have to be filtered or heated) for at LEAST 2 weeks (prefferably more) and just let them be. A much faster, more effective method is a quick, 2-3 minute dilute bleach dip (1:19 bleach:water). Be sure to use unscented bleach and rinse the plants well before adding them to your tank.
EDIT: Plants are MORE than capable of harboring diseases-- pathogens can get stuck to them and be carried in the same water. Also, risidual bleach, in a descent sized tank will NOT kill fish. It takes quite a bit of bleach to kill fish as it is already highly diluted when you buy it*. Also, dechlorinator will neutralize bleach.
*I've tested the effects of hydrogen peroxide and bleach on plants and fish at different concentrations.
Reply:It should not be necessary, plants aren't likely to carry disease. If you are wanting to be carefull of snails, then QT-ing them won't make a difference, it would probably just spread them farther. To get rid of snails and worry on most plants, you can dip them in a diluted bleach solution, I think it is 1:20 or 1:40 parts bleach:water. I'm not sure on how this would work with Java Moss however, I have never tried it with Java Moss, I have with Java Fern to get rid of snails, it worked well.
Most cases however, I just put the plants in the tank, so do most of the fish keepers I know, some do the bleach dip though. Just make sure that you rinse the plants in treated tap water before putting them in the tank, any risidual bleach can and will kill your fish.
Reply:It's possible for plants to carry parasites.
But you don't need to quarantine it like fish if you sterilize the plants first in a solution of 1:20 bleach or potassium permanganate or plane hydrogen peroxide... let the plants sit in the solution for 5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.
Reply:just normal quarantine all alone and for 3 weeks
