I installed Open Office and made a mailing list that I can't open. It said I need JAVA so I went on line and found a bunch of places to download the 7 MB file. My computer does not know the file extension to open the file either.
What is JAVA and is it harmful to a XP computer?
You need to install something called the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). It is not harmful. Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/index.js... and hit the download button; it will automatically run you through the install process and after that you should be all set.
edit: who gave me a bad rating for this? csanon's site links to the page I said to go to...
Reply:Java is a cross-platform programming language that was developed by Sun Computer.
It is not harmful to any version of Windows and can be obtained from www.java.com.
Previously programs had to be compiled for the hardware and OS that the destination computer was running. This meant that a developer had to maintain several different versions of the same program. Using Java they now only have to maintain one code base that can run anywhere on anything.
Reply:There should be only one site you get Java from, and that is from the manufacturer of Java. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ind...
Get JDK 6. The site download is on maintenance right now, so wait a while.
